Hunter Information

Preparing for Your African Hunting Safari

Preparing for a hunting safari in South Africa is an exciting part of the journey. Proper planning helps ensure your trip runs smoothly from arrival to departure. At Klgare Safaris we assist our clients with the necessary information and guidance so that every safari experience is comfortable and well organised. The information below will help you prepare for your hunt, including firearm importation requirements, a practical safari checklist, and a suggested planning timeline before travelling to South Africa.

Firearm Importation

Hunters travelling to South Africa with their own rifles must obtain a temporary firearm import permit upon arrival. This permit allows visiting hunters to legally bring their firearms into the country for the duration of their safari.

When travelling with firearms, hunters should carry the following documents:

  • A valid passport
  • Completed SAPS 520 Temporary Firearm Import Permit form
  • Proof of firearm ownership from your home country
  • Airline documentation confirming firearm transport
  • A letter of invitation from your outfitter

Only hunting rifles and ammunition intended for sporting purposes may be imported. Handguns and fully automatic firearms are not permitted. It is recommended that all documentation is completed before arrival to simplify the process at the airport. Your Professional Hunter or outfitter will assist where necessary to ensure your arrival and firearm clearance are handled efficiently.

Safari Checklist

Packing correctly will help ensure that you remain comfortable throughout your safari. The Kalahari climate can vary between warm days and cooler mornings and evenings, so practical clothing and equipment are recommended.

Suggested items to bring include:

  • Passport and travel documents
  • Firearm documentation if bringing a rifle
  • Comfortable hunting boots
  • Lightweight hunting clothing in neutral colours
  • Warm jacket for early mornings
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Personal medications
  • Camera or binoculars
  • Shooting gloves and hearing protection

Your Professional Hunter will provide shooting sticks and other essential hunting equipment during the safari.

Safari Planning Timeline

12 Months Before Your Safari

Reserve your safari dates and pay the required deposit. This is particularly important for popular hunting months which tend to book well in advance.

6 to 12 Months Before Travel

Book your international flights and arrange any pre or post safari travel plans. Begin preparing physically for the hunt by walking regularly and practising shooting from sticks.

6 Months Before Travel

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel date and that it has enough blank pages. Confirm firearm documentation and discuss any required travel vaccinations with your doctor.

2 to 3 Months Before Travel

Confirm travel details with your outfitter, finalise hunting plans, and begin preparing your equipment and clothing for the safari.

1 Month Before Travel

Review your packing list, confirm flights, and ensure all documents are ready for departure.
